Pro Dophilus High Potency Powder Supplies 10 Billion Organisms per Gram
Acidophilus Inhibits Growth of Pathogenic Micro-Organisms
Acidophilus is a species of bacteria belonging to the genus Lactobacillus, i.e. Lactobacillus acidophilus. All of the lactobacilli are so named because they ferment carbohydrates, especially sugars, with the production of large quantities of lactic acid. This lowers the intestinal pH and creates an acidic environment which inhibits the growth of many other microorganisms, including some that are pathogenic to man.
A Healthy Digestive System Plays a Major Role in the Health of the Entire Body
For thousands of years health care practitioners have recognized that a healthy digestive system with the ability to effectively absorb nutrients and eliminate wastes plays a major role in the health of the entire body.
The first published report of the healthful effects of lactobacilli was that of Metchnikov in 1908, who attributed the remarkable health and longevity of peasants in Bulgaria to their consumption of large quantities of yogurt. Since that time numerous reports have been published concerning the beneficial effects of acidophilus. These studies have shown beneficial results using supplemental acidophilus in the following conditions:
Vaginal Disturbances - Beneficial effects have been seen in cases of vaginitis, urethritis and cystitis, including cases of Candida albicans,(1,2) Staphylococcus aureus,(3) and Neisseria gonorrhea. Chronic cases can cause scarring with permanent damage to the effected organs. Oral supplementation with acidophilus may eliminate the source of the problem. Acidophilus powder may also be mixed with sterile water and used as a douche to rid the vagina and adjacent tissues of these organisms.
Digestive Disorders - Acidophilus can help alleviate a variety of digestive disturbances including both constipation and diarrhea, especially when caused by antibiotic use.(4,5) Successful implantation of acidophilus organisms has brought symptomatic relief in cases of mucous colitis, irritable colon, idiopathic ulcerative colitis and various other disorders that cause constipation.(15) By aiding in the synthesis of digestive enzymes, acidophilus also improves the quality of food.(8-10)
Food Allergies - A group of children suffering from symptoms of food allergies all showed evidence of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacteria deficiencies.(15)
Pathogenic Organisms - By lowering the intestinal pH, acidophilus inhibits the growth of such undesirable micro-organisms, including pathogens such as Clostridium, Salmonella and enterotoxigenic E. coli. Acidophilus has eliminated Salmonella even from long term carriers who had not responded to prolonged antibiotic therapy(6,7) In an in vitro study, acidophyllin, the antibacterial component of acidophilus, caused a 50% inhibition in growth of 27 different types of bacteria in lactic acid free preparations, 10 of which were common pathogens.(15)
Canker Sores and Cold Sores - Acidophilus supplements taken internally and applied topically have been shown to relieve pain and help clear canker sores (aphthous stomatitis) and cold sores (herpes simplex).(15)
Breath and Body Odor - Many undesirable bacteria secrete volatile aromatic substances that are absorbed into the bloodstream. These substances are then excreted by the lungs and the skin giving rise to unpleasant odors. By eliminating the bacterial cause of the problem, both breath and body odor can be improved.
Perianal Irritation - Acidophilus lowers intestinal pH which can relieve itching and irritation of the sensitive perianal tissues caused by alkaline fecal matter.(14)
Cancer Risk Factors - Laboratory studies show that acidophilus reduces the incidence of tumors in animals exposed to known carcinogens.(8,9,11,15) By lowering the levels of fecal bacterial enzymes such as beta-glucuronidase and nitroreductase which can activate carcinogens in the intestines, acidophilus may reduce the risk of colorectal and breast cancer.(11,12,15) High levels of these enzymes are strongly associated with a much higher incidence of colorectal cancer and of breast cancer.
Supplementation with acidophilus has also been shown to be beneficial in reduction of serum cholesterol,(8-10) resolution of intractable eczema(2) and synthesis of several important B complex vitamins.(10-12)
Environmental Factors Upset Micro-Flora Balance
The microorganisms which inhabit the skin and mucus membranes establish a miniature ecosystem with the body to maintain health and well-being. This flora is most prolific in the colon and rectum where one gram of fecal material may contain nearly one trillion organisms including hundreds of millions of acidophilus. In humans acidophilus is found in the distal small intestine, colon, rectum, oral cavity and vagina.
Although the human microflora ecosystem is generally stable, a number of factors can adversely affect the microflora ecosystem including:
The use of broad spectrum antibiotics.
Dietary factors including excess sugar, excess yeast and meats derived from animals given antibiotics.
Immunodepressant drugs used in chemotherapy and the treatment of severe inflammatory autoimmune disorders.
Pathogenic micro-organisms.
Environmental pollutants.
In such cases the normal flora may be replaced by toxin-producing or pathogenic bacteria which may be associated with acute symptoms and/or chronic degenerative disease.
