Vision Adequate Nutrition Can Prevent Eye Problems and Even Improve

While a deficiency of even one nutrient can cause vision problems, the risk for cataract, macular degeneration and other vision problems is most significant when a combined nutrient index is analyzed. Patients with a low antioxidant index have the greatest risk. Loss of vision can be retarded and in some cases vision can be improved when nutrient levels are restored.

  • Forty percent (15/38) regular users of a supplement containing vitamins B-2, C, E and beta carotene with copper, manganese, and selenium, were able to improve vision by one or more lines over a 6 month period.(7)

  • Cataract regression was seen in a patient treated with selenium and vitamins E, B-2 and B-6. In five months of treatment vision improved from 2/10 to 4/10 in the right eye and from 3/10 to 8/10 in the left eye.(6)

  • Eye disease was retarded in 70% of nearly 1,000 patients with age-related macular degeneration or diabetic retinopathy who were treated with vitamins A, C, E and selenium.(7)

  • Preventing eye diseases would not only reduce suffering and disability, it would be economically advantageous as well. In the United States approximately $3.2 billion is spent annually on cataracts alone and approximately 12% of the Medicare budget is spent on cataract removal.(12)

Primary Antioxidant Reserves Diminish with Age

Oxidative stress is believed to play a role in cataract formation and macular degeneration, the two major causes of age-related visual impairment. Primary antioxidant reserves diminish with age. The antioxidant vitamins A, C, E, beta carotene and lutein are all associated with lower risk of cataract formation.

Even a slight deficiency of vitamin A can cause tired eyes, sensitivity to light variations, dry eyelids and susceptibility to infection.(2) Chronic severe deficiency results in ulceration and distortion of the cornea and blindness. The deficiency disease, xerophthalmia, begins with dryness, thickening and wrinkling of the membrane that covers the eye. If deficiency continues, hardened patches (Bitot’s spots) appear on the eye, and a milky appearance develops that eventually results in infection of the iris, formation of scar tissue and blindness.(10) Vitamin A is also essential for formation of visual purple, necessary for proper night vision.(2)

The antioxidant, beta carotene, which can be converted by the body to vitamin A, is not associated with the negative side effects that can occur when high doses of vitamin A are taken daily over a period of months. However, since conversion of beta carotene to vitamin A is not always efficient, adequate intake of both nutrients is important.

Structural and clinical studies show that the carotenoid lutein and its isomer zeaxanthin are concentrated in the retinal macular pigment(13) and are the only carotenoids present in the human lens. Higher intake of these carotenoids has been associated with reduced risk of both cataracts and macular degeneration.(13,14)

As an antioxidant, vitamin C protects the lens proteins and proteases from damage by sunlight. In addition to its antioxidant function, vitamin C is essential for production and maintenance of collagen, particularly important in glaucoma. With vitamin C supplements, almost normal inner eye pressure has been achieved in some patients who were unresponsive to standard medical therapies. Vitamin C works best in conjunction with bioflavonoids such as quercetin. Other flavonoids particularly useful for the eyes are bilberry anthocyanosides and ginkgo heterosides.(9)

In addition to its antioxidant effects, vitamin E has been used to improve visual acuity in myopia (nearsightedness), crossed eyes,(2) and macular degeneration.(7) In a comparison of 175 cataract cases to controls, those who took 300-600 mg. of vitamin C daily had a 70% reduction in cataract risk. Those who took 400 I.U. of vitamin E had a 50% risk reduction.(12)

    Anti-Stress B-Complex Vitamins

B-complex insufficiency results in paralyzed eye muscles, itching, burning, light sensitivity, bloodshot and watering eyes. Nearsightedness often results from stress and B vitamins are important factor for nerve health.(2) Pantothenic acid (B-5), in particular, is an anti-stress vitamin. Thiamin (B-1) is important for intracellular eye metabolism and riboflavin (B-2) deficiency has been linked to cataracts. B-complex with extra riboflavin is recommended for hyperopia (farsightedness).(3)

    Antioxidant Minerals and Enzymes

Minerals such as selenium, copper, manganese and zinc are considered antioxidants because they work in conjunction with antioxidant enzymes and are necessary for the enzymes to function properly. A progressive decrease in the antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase (SOD) and its mineral cofactors (copper, manganese and zinc) occurs with cataract progression. Selenium is essential for production of the enzyme glutathione peroxidase that protects red blood cells and cell membranes from free-radical damage.(9)

Zinc concentration in the human retina is higher than in any other organ. In a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, supplemental zinc retarded progression of macular degeneration.(4) Zinc is also vital for normal lens function and integrity. Low zinc levels are associated with increased risk of cataracts. Both zinc and vitamin A improve night vision and vision restoration time in dim light.(5)

Since nearsightedness often results from stress, calcium may also be beneficial. Tension can appear when there is an under-supply or poor absorption of calcium.(2)

    Amino Acids in the Eye

Glutathione is found at very high concentrations in the lens but its concentration diminishes with age. Reduced levels are found in virtually all forms of cataracts. It functions as an antioxidant, maintains reduced sulfur bonds within the lens proteins, acts as a coenzyme of various enzyme systems, participates in amino acid and mineral transport, and protects the lens from destructive effects of ultraviolet light. Glutathione levels can be increased by providing its amino acid precursors, cysteine, glutamine and glycine.(9) Methionine,(7) vitamin C and selenium supplements can also boost blood glutathione levels.(1)

Taurine deficiency is associated with retinal degeneration. Taurine is released from the retina following light exposure and transported from retina to choroid by the retinal pigment epithelium.(7)

    Herbal Support for the Eyes

Bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus) contains flavonoid compounds known as anthocyanosides, potent antioxidants that improve microcirculation and promote formation of visual purple. Apparently, bilberry anthocyanosides have an affinity for the part of the retina responsible for vision. Positive clinical effects have been seen in macular degeneration, cataracts, retinitis pigmentosa, diabetic retinopathy and night blindness.(8,9)

Ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba) contains ginkgo heterosides that have also demonstrated impressive results in the treatment of macular degeneration.(9)

Eyebright (Euphrasia officinalis) is used to strengthen eye tissues and provide elasticity to the important nerve and optic devices responsible for sight. Its chemical constituents regulate the tensile strength of all fibrous mass in the eyes, tightening or relaxing them as needed.(11)
