Inadequate Digestion of Fats Can Cause Multiple Nutrient Deficiencies

Undigested Fats Block Digestion of Proteins and Carbohydrates

Most solid fats obtained in foods quickly melt at body temperature. If little bile is present or if lipase is lacking, this melted, undigested fat coats all foods, preventing enzymes from combining efficiently with proteins and carbohydrates, thus decreasing their digestion. This can result in deficiencies of fatty acids, vitamins and minerals.(2)

Intestinal bacteria multiply enormously in this huge mass of undigested food, releasing great quantities of histamine and gas which cause discomfort, halitosis, and a foul-smelling stool.(2)

Enzyme Capsule Formula Promotes Lipid Digestion

Lipo-Complex is an enzymatic digestive aid formulated primarily for individuals who have difficulty digesting fats. The main components responsible for fat digestion are:

  • Ox Bile - Bile is extremely important in the digestion of fat and fat-soluble vitamins.(1-3,8)

  • Green Beet Leaf Powder has been found to increase bile flow as well as to aid in carbohydrate and fat metabolism.(4)

  • Lipase, a fat digesting enzyme, is contained in the pancreatic enzyme concentrate.(3,9)

  • While they do not act directly upon the fat, proteolytic enzymes acting on proteins and the amylases acting on carbohydrates are important to fat digestion in that they serve to free the lipid constituents of food.(1) This action is supplied by the protein digesting enzyme, pepsin, and the protease and amylase contained in the pancreatic enzyme concentrate.

Raw liver concentrate is added to support the liver which produces bile and is the primary site of lipid metabolism.

    How Lipid Digestion Should Work

The lipid digestive process is initiated in the mouth as foods are chewed and partially separated. In the esophagus, body heat softens the solid fats. In the stomach, gastric lipase initiates fat breakdown. More important, the proteolytic enzymes acting on proteins and the amylases acting on carbohydrates serve to free the lipid constituents of the food.(1)

The small intestine is the principal site of lipid digestion. Lipids enter the upper small intestine (duodenum) in small amounts.(1) When food containing fat leaves the stomach, hormones cause the gall bladder to empty by inducing vigorous contractions in its muscular walls and stimulating the liver to produce more bile at an accelerated rate.(1,2)

Bile emulsifies the fats, permitting intestinal and pancreatic lipases to split the triglycerides into diglycerides and monoglycerides and finally into free fatty acids and glycerol.(1)

When the System Breaks Down Multiple Deficiencies Can Occur

Pancreatic lipase, along with bile, is necessary for digestion of fats. Deficiency of lipase results in malabsorption of fats and fat soluble vitamins.(3)

When the diet is low in protein or high in refined carbohydrates, little bile can be produced. If the amount of bile is insufficient or the gallbladder is not made to empty itself and/or the liver is not stimulated to produce bile, fats remain in such large particles that enzymes cannot combine readily with them; hence fat digestion is incomplete and fat absorption is markedly reduced.(2)

Part of the undigested fat quickly combines with any calcium and iron in the food to form insoluble soaps; thus these minerals are prevented from reaching the blood, and the hard soaps, causing overly firm stools, bring about constipation. Poor elimination associated with gallbladder problems invariably indicates a major loss of vital minerals. If this condition is prolonged it can cause severe anemia,(2,5) porous bones, spontaneous fractures and the crumbling or collapse of one or more vertebrae.(2,6,7,8)

Although bile contains only water, lecithin, cholesterol, minerals, acids and pigments, it is vital to health. Bile acids are essential before digested fats and the fat soluble vitamins can be carried across the intestinal wall into the blood. Lack of bile acids prevents the absorption of carotene and vitamins A, D, E, and K and whatever fat has been broken down by enzyme action; hence deficiencies of linoleic acid, carotene and the fat soluble vitamins are produced. People with insufficient bile flow are usually so deficient in vitamin A that they have difficulty in driving a car at night, sewing or doing other close work.(2)

In addition, the undigested fats coat proteins and carbohydrates and interfere with their digestion, causing more digestive disturbances and nutritional deficiencies.(2)

When Fat Intolerance Is a Problem Avoiding Fats Is Not The Answer

Although a low-fat diet is customarily recommended to decrease digestive disturbances associated with malabsorption of fats,(2,5) obviously it cannot rectify this situation or increase the absorption of vitamins. To prevent the gall bladder from emptying by adhering to a low-fat diet can actually be harmful. Such diets both under supply and prevent the absorption of essential fatty acids and the fat soluble vitamins, thus causing deficiency states that may be far more devastating than gallbladder problems.(2)

The ingredients in Lipo-Complex can decrease these digestive disturbances while the underlying cause is being treated.
